Reading helps students develop language skills and prepares them for recognizing the written word. With this standard we hope to involve the student’s use of strategies and critical thinking to construct meaning and develop an understanding of the English language.
Reading Anthology
The Longman Pearson Cornerstone and Keystone Series will be used for classroom reading. As students read these stories we hope to develop additional vocabulary that can arise as students make text to self and text to experience connections. The stories also give students real-life fiction and non-fiction writing examples which can aid in their own writing.
Dictionary
As learners of English it is extremely important to have a GOOD dictionary both at home and at school. We require students to bring the ‘Diccionario Inglés’ as part of the course. Ask your teacher for recommendations for home use.
Complementary Reading
Reading should be a big part of a students life. It is not enough to be limited to schoolbooks. Students must be surrounded with a variety of reading material, such as but not limited to, magazines, newspaper (San Juan Star), and comic books. Their is a good collection of books at the school library and in the English classroom. Ask the teacher about choices that are age and interest appropriate.
