This week we started new reading selections, which means…..new vocabualry words.

Studies suggest that students must encounter a new word in print several times in order to remember its meaning. However, the number of encounters needed to learn the word is significantly reduced when students are taught the meaning of the word before encountering it in a reading assignment.

Which is why we ‘preteach’ unfamiliar vocabulary for reading assignments:

So don’t forget to study these words daily and, when possible, try using them in your everyday conversations.

The Free Dictionary – is an online dictionary where you can hear correct pronunciations

Just a friendly reminder that all grades have a test on Tuesday, September 15. Skills and concpets to be covered are as follows:

4th - vocabulary words, recognize animal names and their babies, identifyshort vowel sounds, change singular to plural nouns, use singular and plural nouns in a sentence and reading comprehension (Taking Care  of Their Young).

5th – reading comprehension (Everybody Wins), sequence of events, characters,  classify nouns,  change singular to plural nouns, use singular and plural nouns in a sentence.

6th – vocabulary words, reading comprehension (Jewel in the Sand), identify characters, recognize articles, use correct article.

7th - reading comprehension (Chasing Vermeer), distinguish character and character trait, character web, identify subject noun, object noun, and verbs in a sentence, using correct verb to be.

Everything has gone well this week.  Besides the show and tell scheduled for  Monday (4th -Wednesday).  All grades will be taking a vocabulary quiz on Friday, topics will be as follows:

4M – Wild Animals and their Habitats (swamp, woodland, jungle, grassland)

5th – Vocabulary definitions and using words in context

6th – Nomads

7th – Vocabulary definitions and using words in context.

The topic is Animals.  I have included a copy of the handout here.

Students have been sent home with the instructions and grading criteria for our first show and tell. Due date is on Monday, August 24.  Topics vary according to grade level.  Please remember that the information must be prepared by the student and cannot be read.  This is a casual oral presentation;  although there is nothing to turn in, you must bring in a visual aide.

Last week we celebrated English Week at our school.  Many of our students participated in various of the competitions offered.  I hope to see more of you participating next year.

5th Grade has a vocabulary test on Tuesday, March 10. Be sure to bring in your empty baby food jar before Friday.

7th Grade has a reading and vocabulary test on Thursday, March 12.
